who i am

I'm a finger-style guitarist / multi-instrumentalist based in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m a composer, arranger, music educator, and music engraver with roots in Southern rock, progressive, fusion, and the improvisational tradition of American music. I've spent my career moving between the bandstand and the studio, between mentorship and performance, between the deeply composed and the entirely spontaneous.

How you might know me

In 1999, drummer Eric Sanders, keyboardist Brooks Smith, and I began playing together in Atlanta. The Yeti Trio developed a voice rooted in the odd-metered intensity of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the raw electricity of Tony Williams Lifetime, and the architectural ambition of King Crimson. We’ve been featured in Relix magazine and have played everywhere from The Wetlands to the Wanee Festival

bonobos convergence

Pete Orenstein and Frank Registrato from the acclaimed Orlando jam band Kynda relocated to Atlanta and put out a call for a bassist and hired me to fill both bass and guitar duties (often simultaneously). Bonobos Convergence spent the better part of a decade working the jam band circuit across the Southeast, including several major festivals such as Wanee, Wakarusa, and Hulaween

Roots Rock Revival

Butch Trucks, along with Oteil Burbridge, and Luther and Cody Dickinson, believed that the music they helped build deserved to be passed forward - not just preserved, but practiced, taught, and lived. Roots Rock Revival resulted: a Masters Camp Collective event where players young and old could immerse themselves in the tradition from the people who made it. I was added as an artist in 2016 and since Butch’s passing in 2017 I have served as the Trucks family voice for Roots Rock Revival.

butch trucks and the freight train band

When the Allman Brothers Band retired, Butch Trucks wasn't finished with live music. He put together two touring bands. A bigger, festival-based band - Les Brers featuring many Allman Brothers alumni, and a smaller club circuit band -  Butch Trucks and the Freight Train Band. The original lineup of the Freight Tran Band was Butch, me, Berry Duane Oakley on bass, and Bruce Katz on keyboards. Over time, the band grew to include Damon Fowler, Heather Gillis, and Garrett Dawson.

Brother & Sister

The model Dweezil Zappa established for performing his father's music always made sense to me. Like Zappa Plays Zappa, Brother & Sister isn’t a tribute act, but an ensemble assembled specifically because they can execute the music as it was intended to be played. Brother & Sister has toured the East coast since 2021, with several sets at the Peach festival in Pennsylvania.

the albums i have missed

What started as a pandemic project has grown into an ongoing YouTube channel and podcast in which I go beyond the simple reaction video. Across 5 seasons, each week I will listen to an album I’ve never heard before, but not just once. I will listen several times a day for a week before talking about it. The result isn’t a reaction or a review but rather an attempt to understand myself better by being honest about my relationship with music and culture.
